How Interior Design can Reflect Your Mood and Emotions at Home

Generally, when we talk about interior designing, we confine our thinking to just the aesthetics and functions. We only think about color, furniture, lights and decor items- there is much more to interior design than these. Have you ever wondered why you feel energized at some places and a little dull at other? Considering that you live in an apartment, obviously all the other apartments in your vicinity would have the same basic structure and the same carpet area. Yet, you may get a different feeling in each home.

Different moods are evoked at different places because of the choice of your interior design and home decor that can have a significant impact on how or what you feel. You could simply assess these emotions by going to two different homes and asking yourself just one question. To begin with, start with your home first. Ask yourself these few questions:

1. How does a home make you feel when you enter?
2. Do the wall/floor colors and textures evoke any kind of emotion?
3. Does the overall ambience/lighting reflect or transform your mood?

Now, go to a friend’s place and ask yourself these same questions again. You would definitely feel different in both places.

So, while you consider interior designing for your home, you should understand how an interior design and home decor would reflect your mood and emotions.

The Colors

Colors are much more than their visual appearance. This is why brands spend millions on choosing the color combinations for their logos and designs. If you notice, you would find that brands belonging to a particular industry would use more or less similar colors. Companies that sell bathroom fittings use more of blues and greys, whereas, companies that sell furniture use more of brown and beige. It is because blue represents a feeling a freshness and calmness, whereas, brown evokes a sense of strength, comfort and warmth. It is often seen as solid, much like the earth.

The color choices in your interior design can have an extraordinary impact on your moods. That is why we have made a list of colors along with what emotions it evokes and where you could use them aptly.

Black: symbolizes assertion of power. You could use black for your home decor pieces, frames for wall hangings, etc.

Red: enhances warmth and intimacy. It works as an excellent accent color. Also, it could be used for your kitchen drawer and cabinet knobs.

White: represents cleanliness, purity and minimalism. You need to be cautious while using white, as too much of white can appear to be sterile. White is perfect for small rooms. It can make your space look brighter, cleaner and spacious.

Yellow: is associated with happiness and creativity. It is a great stimulant for mental activities. Hence it is recommended for study areas.

Green: is closely associated with nature. It can evoke a feeling of tranquillity and freshness.

The Shapes & Geometry

The seating arrangements, storage cabinets, the wall hangings, home decor pieces and even the coasters that sit on your coffee table add up to your home’s overall interior design. Not just the color of it, but also the shapes add up to the mood and emotions that you evoke at a certain place.

Bold, exaggerated and sharp finished items demonstrate a feeling of optimism and assertion. On the other hand, the items with soft curves and velvet textures give you a sense of relaxation, fluidity and flexibility- the one which you would want at your home.

The Arrangements

The arrangements of your furniture can make an impact in unimaginable ways. It can influence how much or how little people interact at your home- be it guests or even within the family. If your seating arrangements are positioned against walls alone, it would discourage people from interacting. But a little shift in seating arrangements, would spark up interactions with the guests and even within the family. The placement of chairs, sofas, tables should be well thought of in order to make the place feel lively, spark up interactions and make it look uncluttered. Most importantly, the easy maneuvering of the users at home needs to be thought of correctly.

The Lighting

Proper lighting techniques are known to improve mood and energy levels. Hence institutions, libraries, study areas must have perfect lights to enhance this feeling.
Insufficient or improper lighting techniques have been found to contribute to depression as a result affecting your productivity.
Architects and designers always promote using natural light in their planning and design, be it for residences, commercial or office spaces- as it equates to happiness.

Homes are a reflection of your personality. Your home’s interior design would not only reflect your social standing but it also reflects your moods and emotions to a great extent. Every choice you make regarding your home’s interior design could evoke a different set of emotions. So, you need to avoid some common interior designing mistakes to create a space that is pleasing to your mind, body and soul.
